September Reads & Favorites: 2023
I managed to chew through a total of ten books during the month of September, several of which found a permanent spot on my favorites list.
Here are all of the books that I finished in September 2023. I have to say… this was a good month. Just about every one of these was a fantastic read.
I Cried to Dream Again: Trafficking, Murder, and Deliverance -- A Memoir by Sara Kruzan
The Stranger by Albert Camus
The Devil in Pew Number Seven: A True Story by Rebecca Nichols Alonzo
The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness by Elyn Saks
A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw
The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan
Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott
The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski
Men We Reaped: A Memoir by Jesmyn Ward
Blindness by Jose Saramago
Top Picks
Sara Kruzan’s story was shocking. I had never read anything about human trafficking so this book stood out among the other true crime/non-fiction books I have read. Heartbreaking story, but one of hope and triumph as well.
Living Dead Girl and The Cement Garden were both very dark in unique and different ways. I believe both have been added to my “Dark Reads” list on Goodreads. The Painted Bird was haunting. I don’t know another way to explain it. It had such an impact that I discussed it in a previous podcast episode. Blindness was another dark and powerful read. It was wildly creative and a page-turner in every sense. I will most likely be devoting an episode to it soon.
